How Solo Entrepreneurs Can Combat Isolation

Entrepreneurs typically work long hours, off-hours, alone and maniacally driven in a way that doesn’t always make sense to the nine-to-five set. As a result, it is not uncommon for small business owners to experience profound isolation at times.

Feeling alone? Here are a couple of ways to help you get over it:

Be more selective with your network

The obvious remedy to combating isolation is to network more with other like-minded entrepreneurs. Just remember that it is very possible to be constantly surrounded by people and still feel completely alienated. Are you really connecting with the other small business owners in your network? Do you truly share outlooks, visions, work ethics, and standards? Do you actually like and respect each other? Is your network constantly challenging you to push yourself or are you actually a big fish in a small pond? If you find that you are constantly business networking and yet still feel uninspired, apathetic and bored, perhaps it is time to throw caution to the wind and test some deeper waters.

Collaborate

Instead of always being the lone solopreneur, think about collaborating with other small businesses on some projects. Working with other great minds to achieve a common goal can forge some meaningful relationships and cure you of your isolation.

Socialize like your work depended on it

Recognize that feeling lonely is detrimental to your health and to the well-being of your business. Make coming out of isolation a priority. Look at your schedule. Really, really look at it. Map out times for work and times for play. Include family time, as well as time for rest and rejuvenation. While you are at it, do not forget to schedule time for yourself. Submit to the schedule. Do not break social dates: treat them as you would business meetings. That time is in the calendar for a very good reason. Respect it. Stick to the schedule.
