When to Fire a Client

As small business owners, we can sometimes become so obsessed with pleasing our clients and potential clients that we lose sight of when it may be time to say goodbye.

Sometimes a client relationship – just like any other kind of relationship – can turn out to be dysfunctional. And when that happens, it’s time to cut the client loose! After all, constantly combatting a problem client takes time, energy and resources away from your small business. It can also wreak havoc on your sanity.

So how do you know when it’s time to fire a client? Here are a few hints:

They are always in crisis

Last minute deadlines, calls in the middle of the night, impromptu meetings, unforeseen changes… if your client is always in a state of emergency and needs everything “yesterday” chances are they are they just don’t know what they are doing. You cannot run a successful business with clients who expect you to drop everything and run to them at their every whim. Work with clients who respect your time, your schedule, and support an organized and productive workflow. Emergencies come up, but they should be the exception more than the rule. There is something intrinsically wrong with a client who is constantly in a state of panic.

 

They never have money

Do they nickel and dime you? Do they question every item on your invoice? Do they try to make you feel bad about what you charge? Once they get billed, do they take forever to pay? What it all boils down to is that they undervalue you and your business. Either that, or they just can’t afford you. In any case, you deserve better. Move on.

 

They don’t trust you

Ever have a client who doesn’t listen to you and then expects you to magically come to the rescue when everything backfires? Do they constantly question your methods or compare your work to that of other businesses? If they can’t put their faith in you, despite your best efforts to gain their trust, then the issue is with them and not you. Find a client who believes in your talents.

If you find that you are repeatedly attracting problem clients, take a step back and look at your branding. Does your brand reflect the kind of client you wish to work with?
