6 Characteristics of a Great Infographic

It’s really no wonder why infographics have become so prominent on websites, blogs, social media and the digital marketing realm. When it comes to marketing your small business online, visuals such as infographics have proven to be very powerful for several reasons:

– they are able to convey lots of data and information in a way that is fast and easy-to-digest

– humans are visual creatures: we like pretty things and are naturally drawn to them

– search engines love them

– Facebook filters love them

– they stand out in social media feeds and streams

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when making an infographic to market your business:

1) Break it Down for Your Reader
What does all that dry data from that study or survey mean? Break it down, take a pile of dry boring numbers and make them into pretty images that are convincing and topical!

2) Keep it Simple
Limit the scope of your infographic. Don’t try to make too many points. If possible, stick to just one main topic or idea. Know exactly what statement you are trying to get across, support it with data, and at the end, summarize.

3) Get to the Point
Be brief. Much like a blog post, you are far more likely to keep your reader engaged right through till the end if you are brief and to the point. Don’t make your reader scroll through superfluous information.

4) Design Like a Pro
When designing your infographic, keep in mind that you are not only making something that needs to be visually pretty, but it also needs to communicate an idea. Breaking down data in a clear, concise manner, and then compiling it into a stunning image requires serious design and communication skills!

5) Mind Your Brand
While you don’t want to be overly self-promotional, you do want your infographic to help leverage your business. Make sure that the content and look of your infographic is consistent with your branding. Your infographic should make you look like an expert providing much needed guidance to your target audience .

6) Share
Encourage everyone to share your concise, well-designed, topical infographic. Furthermore, make sure it is easy to share across the web and across various social media platforms.
