Small business owners are well-known for always being busy with little time to spare. Because business survival often depends almost exclusively on the business owner, it can seem inappropriate or even selfish for an entrepreneur to consider taking some “me time.”
As a result, many small business owners forego small acts of self-care. Activities such as taking time to exercise, or eating a healthy diet can seem to be excessive and “taking away” from what should be the entrepreneur’s main focus: their business. In extreme cases, being too busy to take care of one-self even becomes a sort of badge of honor: “I only get 3 hours of sleep a night because I’m SO busy.”
If you’re a small business owner with this mindset, consider this: much like a mother can’t take care of a child to her best abilities if she herself isn’t operating at one hundred percent, a business owner needs to enjoy optimum health and vitality in order for their business to reach its full potential.
So if you think you don’t have the time for or are justified in indulging in:
- taking time to exercise
- getting enough sleep
- planning and preparing a healthy food
- engaging in yoga or meditation
- seeking out the services of a chiropractor, massage therapist, psychotherapist or any other such health specialists,
ask yourself these questions:
- Will you have more energy to spend on your business if you ate well, exercised well, and slept well?
- Will your focus improve, and will that in turn help your business thrive?
- If you were to get sick, even if it were just for a few days, would your business suffer?
- If you keep up your current pace, do you see yourself eventually burning out? Will your business burn out with you?
If you answered “yes” to any of the above, you should realize that looking after yourself should be your priority, otherwise how can you take care of your business, or for that matter, anyone else?
