Running a small business can often feel like running a marathon. And all runners – and business owners – are familiar with the proverbial “wall” and sometimes feel like they can’t go on any further.
Owning a small business can be brutal at times: the long hours, the sacrifices and the infrequent rewards can leave you wondering if it’s even all worth it.
So here are a few tips to keep you pushing through that dreaded wall when it hits:
Celebrate little goals
If you’re focused on one monumental goal, it might be a very long time before you feel a sense of accomplishment. And you need a sense of accomplishment to keep you going. Set small, achievable goals and celebrate those victories when they come up. Practicing gratitude in this way will keep you motivated.
Don’t listen to everyone
When you’re an entrepreneur, you’ll find that everyone has an opinion about what you’re doing… especially non-entrepreneurs! They might have good intentions, but their negativity can bring you down. Remember that you are the expert on your business. You have an inside track. You have spent countless hours obsessing over your product or service. You know your brand better than anyone. If you don’t like what your friends are telling you, consider getting new friends. Surround yourself with like-minded positive people and they will help drive you forward.
Get a coach
If you find yourself having a hard time staying motivated and focused on your goals, consider hiring a professional business coach. A reliable business coach will supply objective, unbiased advice and will have your back when it comes to your business. A great coach has been where you have been and knows the challenges you face. They also know what great things lie ahead for you.
Focus on what you’re great at
There are many facets to running a small business, and there is no way you can be great at all of them. Focus on what you’re great at (your business) and get as much help as you can in areas outside your expertise: marketing, branding, design, social media, bookkeeping etc.
Take breaks
A break will do wonders for your motivation. If you can’t take a proper vacation, take a day off. Even a fancy lunch outside the office, or a brisk walk, or a decent night’s sleep will put everything in perspective and make a difference. Be kind to yourself!
Remember Your Roots
Roots keep you balanced. Entrepreneurs are notorious for struggling with work-life balance. Do not fall into this trap. Remember your roots: that is, remember why you became an entrepreneur in the first place. What launched you on this path? It is very likely that you embarked on this journey because you were seeking balance in your life. For example, maybe you were not spending enough time with your kids. So ask yourself, are you spending more time with them now? Even though your business isn’t where you want it to be (maybe you aren’t making as much money as you would like), are you on track with finding balance in your life (are you more available for your family)? If you are, you have plenty to be positive about!
