Many small businesses experience the occasional down-time or an off-season. It’s a natural part of the business cycle.
Instead of sitting idle or panicking over a temporary slump in activity, here are a few things that you as an entrepreneur can do to maximize your less-than-busy period so that your peak season sails more smoothly.
Brainstorm
It takes time to cultivate new ideas, so reaping the benefits of brainstorming with a mastermind group rarely happens instantly. There never seems to be enough time to entertain out-of-the-box ideas during busy season, so make the most of less hectic times so that the groundwork is laid out for when times get busy again.
Build up a reservoir of content
Take advantage of your time off to create a backlog of digital content that is going to help engage your target audience when business is back in full swing: write blog posts, create infographics, shoot videos and produce podcasts… there’s never enough time to get these accomplished when business is busy!
Clear the cobwebs
Take inventory of all those tiny administrative tasks that seem to suddenly pile up: reorganize your filing system, get your accounting under control, update software, and maintain and upgrade equipment. These pesky jobs are never priority but they slow down production. Down-time is the time to clear your desk and empty your inbox!
Upgrade yourself
Are there any books, seminars, webinars or podcasts you’ve been meaning to check out? Invest in yourself while things are slow at the office and your business will thank you later.
Re-visit your branding and marketing
Pause and think hard about your brand: take this opportunity to re-evaluate your brand values, target audience (demographics and psychographics) and your methods for reaching this audience. Does your website need an overhaul? Does your business card or any other marketing materials need a re-design? It may be time to revamp!
Just Relax!
Sometimes, the best thing you can do for overall productivity is go on vacation. A little rest, rejuvenation and reflection may just be what is best for you and your small business.
